about Eat Smart! for schools

The Eat Smart! School Program offers the same advantages of the restaurant program to the school community.

Through its "Award of Excellence" program, the Eat Smart! School Program offers recognition to secondary and post-secondary Ontario school cafeterias and school food service providers that meet exceptional standards in nutrition, food safety and smoke free dining by qualifying the school on a set of three (3) criteria:

1. Healthy Food Choices - the Facility must provide a variety of healthier food
   choices, on the menu and by request, including whole grains, vegetables and fruit, lower fat options and substitutions;
2. Food Safety - the Facility must have an excellent track record in food safety based on the requirements of Ontario’s Food Premises Regulation and at least one fulltime kitchen employee certified in safe food handling; and
3. 100% smoke free dining - the Facility must be in compliance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2005) and not sell tobacco products or accessories.

   Participating schools include both secondary and post-secondary insititutions.

   There are currently 235 Eat Smart! schools in the province of Ontario
